Types of Drywall
There are many types of drywall one can use, depending on the house or room. At Drywall Squad we have the knowledge and experience to select the right type of drywall for your home.
We will go over many of the options available to you as a homeowner when it comes to drywall installation.
Plain white drywall
This is the most common type of drywall available to customers in Toronto. Sheet sizes include 7’4” for tight spaces such as basements, 8’ sheets, 9’ sheets, 10’ sheets, and 12’ sheets. ½” drywall is the most common thickness, but drywall is also available in ¼” for curved walls, or where space is limited and you want to maximize your living area, 3/8” drywall is available but not as common, and lastly 5/8” drywall.
Fire rated drywall
5/8” Type X fire rated drywall can be used for any drywall installation project. It is most commonly used to achieve fire separation in apartment dwellings, or when an exterior wall is close to a neighbouring property line.
Moisture and mold resistant drywall
While no drywall is moisture or mold proof, there are options available to help mitigate any mould from growing on your walls. This is where greenboard and purple board come in. In the past, one offered moisture resistance, while the other offered mould resistance. Nowadays these two types of drywall offer the same benefits, they’re just manufactured by different companies.
Bathtub and shower areas
When it comes to showers, the two types of drywall installed are Denshield, and Cementboard. These two types of drywall have rough faces to allow tile mortar to adhere properly, also blocking any water penetration through the drywall. While most tile installers will recommend using Denshield, Cementboard should be used in shower areas that have a steam function.
Soundproof drywall
A relatively new product, soundproof drywall performs as the name suggests. It is essentially two sheets of drywall glued together with a special polymer to give it the sound dampening effect. The price of the material is significantly higher than plain drywall, and the labour required to install it also drives the cost up. This is one way of soundproofing your basement, shared wall, or any room in your house where noise is an issue. There are many other options when it comes to soundproofing with drywall in your home.
